THE GREY AREA OF GRAMMAR: Refresher Course for Writers and Editors

Instructed by Vinnie Kinsella
Date: Nov. 15
Saturday, 10 to noon

The rules of Grammar aren’t always black and white. Many of the rules you were taught in school aren’t rules at all. You are free to blatantly split your infinitives. Fragments? Use them. These are among the numerous issues that fall into the grammar grey area—an adventurous place for writers.

Learn to navigate these waters, and your writing will come alive. This workshop will help you understand the trickier conventions of English grammar. You will learn the rules, then learn how to effectively break them. In this workshop, you will explore many of the antiquated and unfounded grammar rules that are still needlessly taught today, receive tips on how to deal with grammar and punctuation rules that aren’t well defined by grammarians (such as when to hyphenate), and learn the differences between grammar, word usage, and style.

Vinnie Kinsella teaches Book Editing and Copyediting as part of the Master’s in Writing/Book Publishing program at Portland State University. Over the years, Vinnie has been contracted by a number of local businesses and nonprofit organizations in need of his professional experience in writing, editing, and document design. He has worked closely with authors whose writings range in style from historical fiction to theological discourse. He is particularly adept at working with new and emerging authors in need of both his careful editorial eye and his knowledge of the inner workings of the publishing industry.
